John J. Cusimano, University Treasurer and Associate Vice President for Finance, Virginia Tech Foundation
Mr. Cusimano has worked at Virginia Tech since 1988. He currently serves as the Treasurer for the University and the Associate Vice President for Finance for the Foundation. Mr. Cusimano oversees the investment of over $1.7 billion of financial assets for both the University and the Foundation. His responsibilities include oversight of the Foundation's endowment and deferred gift programs, the University's optional retirement program investment policy and the operating and short-term investment funds of both the University and the Foundation. He also manages the comprehensive debt program for the University and a number of University-related corporations. Mr. Cusimano earned both his bachelor's degree in finance and his master's in business administration from the University. He represents the University within the state and local business community by serving as a member of the State Non-Arbitrage Program ("SNAP") Advisory Board, as Vice President and Investment Committee Chair of the MBC Development Corporation, and as the Administrative Advisor to three student-led investment groups that manage approximately $11 million of endowment funds for the Foundation. Mr. Cusimano has directly managed the issuance of approximately 50 bond/debt issues for a total par amount over $1 billion for both the University and the Foundation.
John L. Grant, Manager, Investment Operations
Mr. Grant joined the Virginia Tech Foundation in February 1998 where he serves as the Manager of Investment Operations. He is responsible for managing the operating cash balances of both the University and Foundation and coordinates the myriad operational requirements of the consolidated endowment. He also establishes new bank accounts and broker accounts as needed to support the related subsidiaries of the Foundation and oversees donor transfers related to the planned giving program. Prior to his arrival, he served in the U.S. Navy as a Naval Flight Officer aboard the P-3 Orion maritime patrol aircraft and various ship tours including the aircraft carrier, USS America. Mr. Grant holds a BS from the University of South Carolina and an MBA from the University of Maine.
Michael Walsh, Director of Debt Management
Mr. Walsh joined the Virginia Tech Foundation in January 2016 where he serves as the Director of Debt Management. He manages the planning, analysis, structuring, sale and closing of bond offerings and oversees all financing activities for both the University and the Foundation. Prior to joining Virginia Tech, he worked at the Virginia Department of Treasury and led the Virginia College Building Authority, as well as served as the Assistant Director of Debt and Investments for Virginia Commonwealth University. Mr. Walsh holds a BA in economics from Hampden-Sydney College and is also a graduate of the Virginia Executive Institute.
Daniel A. Ward, Director of Investments
Mr. Ward joined the Virginia Tech Foundation in April 2008 where he serves as its Director of Investments. He leads all aspects of managing the Foundation’s portfolio including manager and investment selection and setting asset allocation policy. The Foundation currently oversees approximately $1.3Billion in operating funds and long-term endowment funds which support the University. Prior to joining Virginia Tech, he was the director of research for Integritas Advisors, a family office, from July 2004 to April 2008. Mr. Ward holds a BBA from The University of Michigan Business School, an MBA from The University of Florida Warrington College of Business and is a CFA Charterholder.
Ben Stoddard, Senior Investment Analyst
Mr. Stoddard joined the Virginia Tech Foundation in June 2012 where he serves as a Senior Analyst. His primary focus is on manager and investment research in South America and Europe. He also focuses on direct deals and select strategies within the U.S. Prior to joining Virginia Tech, he invested in asset-based service businesses, was a portfolio manager for a large single family office in Minneapolis and was a loan officer at Merrill Lynch Credit. Mr. Stoddard holds a bachelor’s degree from University of Miami and an MBA from University of Minnesota. He is a CFA and CAIA Charterholder.
Bryan Boehling, Investment Analyst
Mr. Boehling joined the Virginia Tech Foundation in January 2015 where he serves as an Investment Analyst. His primary focus is on manager and investment research in Asia. He also focuses on direct deals and select strategies within the U.S. Prior to joining Virginia Tech, Mr. Boehling worked for an alternative investment firm, focusing on credit, private equity, and real asset strategies, as well as a sell-side investment bank, focusing on mergers and acquisitions. Mr. Boehling holds a BS in Finance and Accounting from Virginia Tech. He is a CFA and CAIA Charterholder.
Dave Marone, Analyst
Mr. Marone joined the Virginia Tech Foundation in May 2014 where he serves as an Analyst. His primary focus is on performance and reporting. He also focuses on risk management. Mr. Marone holds a BS in Finance from Virginia Tech and an MBA from Virginia Tech and is a Level 1 Candidate in the CFA program.
